WPC doors vs solid wood doors: which one should you import for humid climates?

Updated 2026-09-28 · JIAHOME export team

If your market is humid — coastal Africa, the Gulf, Southeast Asia or Latin American coastlines — the choice between WPC and solid wood decides your warranty claims. Here is how the two behave in the field, and how to split a container between them.

What each product actually is

A WPC door is a wood-plastic composite: wood fibre or flour bound in a thermoplastic matrix, usually extruded or hot-pressed into a hollow or solid panel, then laminated. A solid wood door is a timber skeleton (rails and stiles) with a solid or engineered core and a timber surface. They fail in completely different ways, which is why importers should treat them as two product lines rather than two grades of the same thing.

Moisture behaviour

Solid wood moves with humidity — it swells and shrinks, and in a bathroom or a coastal flat that movement shows up as sticking doors, hairline splits along the grain and finish cracking at the joints. Seasoned timber and a proper primer reduce this, but they do not remove it.

WPC does not absorb water the way timber does. A well-made WPC door keeps its dimensions in bathrooms, utility rooms, kitchens and semi-outdoor corridors where a timber door would need constant maintenance. This is the single strongest argument for WPC in humid markets.

Weight, hardware and installation

Solid wood doors are heavier, so they need three hinges and a sturdier frame; WPC doors are lighter and put less load on the frame and the wall. Lighter doors ship cheaper per container and are easier for installers on site, which matters on large apartment projects.

Both types accept standard mortise locks and hinges — but always confirm the lock case depth and the hinge cut-outs against the door core before you place a production order.

How to split a container

A workable pattern for humid markets:

Mixing 40HQ containers this way keeps one supplier, one finish schedule and one packing list for the whole project.

What to put in the purchase order

Whatever you choose, specify: leaf size and thickness, surface finish and colour reference, core construction, edge banding, lock and hinge preparation, packing method (carton, pallet, corner protection) and the moisture content or composite density you expect. Vague orders are the main cause of disputes on interior doors.

Frequently asked questions

Are WPC doors waterproof?

They are moisture-resistant rather than fully waterproof: the composite panel resists water absorption far better than timber, but cut edges, hardware holes and joints still need sealing. They are the right choice for bathrooms and humid climates when installed correctly.

Can WPC doors be painted?

Most are supplied with a decorative film or a primed surface. Painting over a laminated film is not recommended; if you need a painted finish, order the primed or paintable version.

Which is cheaper to import?

Unit price depends on specification, not only material. WPC is often lighter, which reduces freight per door, while solid wood carries a higher material cost. Ask for a container-level comparison, not just a per-piece price.
