Door edge banding and lipping compared: PVC, ABS, aluminium and timber veneer

2026-10-23
Most door failures start at the edge: water wicks into an exposed core, the banding lifts, and the leaf starts to swell. The lipping specification rarely appears in a quotation, but it is one of the cheapest places to prevent a claim.

Why the edge matters more than the face

The face is sealed by the finish. The edge is a cut through the board, so it exposes the core unless something covers it. In humid climates and in bathrooms, that cut edge is the first place to fail.

PVC banding (0.4-2mm)

The default for volume interior doors. Cheap, available in any colour, and easy to machine. Thin PVC (0.4-0.8mm) is fine for dry interiors but dents easily.

ABS banding

Same look as PVC, but tougher and free of chlorine. It resists impact and UV better, which matters for doors near glazing or in hot climates.

Aluminium lipping

An extruded aluminium profile fixed to the vertical edges. It is the most durable edge for public and commercial buildings, and it is visible — so it becomes a design feature rather than something you hide.

Timber veneer lipping

A solid wood strip glued to the edge so the door reads as solid timber from every angle. Necessary whenever the face is a real veneer, because a PVC edge would be immediately obvious.

Frequently asked questions

What banding thickness should I specify for a humid market?

At least 1.5mm, and ABS rather than PVC if the budget allows. Below 1mm the banding is essentially decorative and will not survive a wet bathroom or a coastal climate.

Can I change the lipping after the order is placed?

No — the groove and the banding are set in the production file. Changing it means re-machining the leaf. Decide the lipping specification together with the core and the finish, before the first sample is approved.
