Melamine, laminate, veneer and lacquer: door surface finishes compared

Updated 2026-09-28 · JIAHOME export team

Two doors with the same core can sell at very different prices because of the surface. Here is what each finish really is, and where it belongs.

Melamine

A resin-impregnated decorative paper pressed onto the board. It is scratch-resistant, easy to clean, available in hundreds of wood grains and solid colours, and the most economical finished surface. It is the standard choice for apartment work, rental and volume housing.

Laminate (HPL)

A thicker, higher-pressure decorative sheet bonded to the substrate. It takes more abuse than melamine, handles strong cleaning agents better and hides impact marks, which makes it a sensible upgrade for hotels, schools and clinics.

Veneer

A thin slice of real timber glued to the core. It gives the warmth and grain continuity that no printed film fully reproduces, and it can be stained and lacquered. It needs more careful handling, protection during transport and a stable indoor environment.

Lacquer / painted

A sprayed finish over MDF or a primed timber door. It offers any colour, a very smooth surface and easy repair or repainting on site. Curing quality decides durability, so production conditions matter as much as the paint brand.

Matching finish to market

For every finish, approve a physical sample and keep it as the reference for the whole order — colour variation between batches is normal and only a retained sample settles it.

Frequently asked questions

Which finish is best for a humid bathroom?

A composite door with a sealed film finish, not a veneered timber door. Moisture attacks the edges and the veneer joint first.

Is melamine suitable for hotel projects?

It survives normal guest use, but high-traffic corridors and service areas do better with laminate or a painted, repairable finish.
